The Major Benefits of Minor Cannabinoids: CBN, CBG, and THCV

In the United States, cannabis has grown into a billion-dollar industry. 38 states and counting offer recreational and medical products.

As markets emerged across the country, cannabis products became more prevalent. But an unfortunate trend developed—most products were primarily marketed around tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This strategy overlooked other valuable phytocannabinoids, even as other cannabinoids—such as cannabidiol (CBD)—gained recognition.

But where did this leave other valuable cannabinoids?

Cannabidiol has gained popularity as wellness products hit the shelves in many forms, making the benefits accessible to a wide range of people. Now, people are beginning to expand their knowledge in new directions—away from just THC and CBD—to consider beneficial minor cannabinoids.

We’re seeing that minor cannabinoids aren’t that minor after all.

What Are Minor Cannabinoids?

THC and CBD are examples of major cannabinoids, which are naturally occurring compounds found in the cannabis plant. They have much say in the experience people may have when consuming cannabis products.

The cannabis plant hosts many terpenes and phytocannabinoids, all of which combine to produce “the entourage effect.”

THC, CBD, and terpenes all contribute to the nuanced effects and benefits that each strain produces. Did you know there are over 100 other cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant? And the lesser-known molecules are often called “minor cannabinoids,” and play a role in producing therapeutic values for you.

Some examples of minor cannabinoids are CBN, CBG, and THCV. They’re gaining attention for their remarkable benefits and potential to produce therapeutic effects.

CBN (Cannabinol) – A Natural Way to Beat Insomnia

Cannabinol (CBN) is a minor cannabinoid that is found in the cannabis plant. It’s primarily recognized for its tranquilizing properties and potential to help you get to sleep and stay asleep.

CBN is a result of THC degrading over time, so you’ll often find it in older cannabis flower. And it’s associated with inducing a drowsy, sedative experience, making it perfect for easing restless nights. Often combined with compounds like THC and CBD, or other natural sleep aids like melatonin, CBN has become a popular choice to combat insomnia.

CBN benefits are continuing to be explored, with promise in a few different areas:

  • Anti-inflammatory properties: CBN has the potential to reduce inflammation.
  • Pain relief: CBN has shown potential for having powerful pain-relieving properties.
  • Neuroprotective properties: A study conducted by the Salk Institute explored the potential of CBN for treating neurological disorders, including traumatic brain injuries, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s disease.

CBG (Cannabigerol) – Mother of Cannabinoids

Cannabigerol (CBG) is one of the most exciting cannabinoids. It’s the precursor to every cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant. During the plant’s growth, enzymes convert CBG into other cannabinoids like THC and CBD, leaving only a small amount behind in the mature plant.

Despite the low amount of CBG in most recreational products, it’s being explored more in products for its therapeutic properties.

A 2022 research paper examined the different benefits of CBG, which included:

  • Anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects: CBG has been shown to reduce inflammation in various studies and aid in conditions like inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
  • Glaucoma treatment: Research shows that CBG can reduce intraocular pressure (the pressure inside your eye), which can be beneficial for conditions like glaucoma.
  • Skin health: CBG has the potential to help with skin conditions like psoriasis and acne.

THCV (Tetrahydrocannabivarin) – Appetite Suppressant

Tetrahydrocannabivarin (THCV) is recognized for its distinctive ability to do what many other cannabinoids can’t—suppress appetite. A 2020 research paper highlighted THCV’s capacity to regulate energy metabolism without the psychoactive effects typically associated with THC.

The study further demonstrated THCV’s potential as a therapeutic option for managing obesity and type 2 diabetes by improving glycemic control and insulin sensitivity.

However, it’s important to note that a 2016 paper found that when THCV is combined with CBD, CBD has the potential to counteract THCV’s ability to suppress hunger. Despite this interaction, THCV continues to present promising opportunities for further research in treating diseases.
