The Different Types of Cannabis Edibles

Cannabis edibles are defined as any food or beverage product that is infused with cannabinoid extracts from cannabis or hemp. Thanks to recent nano-encapsulated technology and extraction science, CBD, THC, and other alternative cannabinoids can easily be infused into many different forms of edible food and beverage products.

Gummies & Fruit Chews

Other than maybe a vague scent of sweetness, cannabis gummies are favored for their discreet and odorless smell. They are often packaged as being pre-dosed, so you know what dosage of cannabinoids you’re getting with each bite. Gummies and candies infused with cannabis are consumed by digestion, meaning they are absorbed and broken down through the digestive system.

Edible gummies can be sweet, sour, or savory – some edible brands are formulated with specific ingredients and cannabinoids to induce certain effects, such as deeper sleep or increased energy.

  • Betty’s Eddies are delicious fruit chews that come in a variety of flavors and infusions. Grab a “Go Betty Go” pack of watermelon chews for long-lasting energy, or the “Bedtime Betty’s” for a well-rested night of sleep.
  • Swap out the alcohol for a Cannatini, RSO cannabis gummies infused with classy blends of your favorite martini drink. The Wild Strawberry Bellini gives the taste of the sparkling cocktail in a 1:1 balanced ratio.
Chocolates

Chocolate edibles can look like your average chocolate bar, but be infused with major cannabinoids such as THC or CBD. Cannabis chocolate is simple to dose because it’s often pre-measured out into small squares to easily break off and consume. Cannabis oil from the extraction process is infused into the chocolate before cooling off and molding into the candy’s final form.

Like other edibles, cannabis chocolates are ingested and broken down through the digestive tract and liver.

Coast Cannabis Co.’s Dark Chocolate Raspberry is made with organic fair-trade dark chocolate and 5mg THC per square.

Edible Lozenges & Drops

Similar to cannabis gummies or candies, lozenges, and drops can also be infused with cannabinoids for elevated effects. Cannabis lozenges, mints, or drops work by slowly dissolving the cannabinoids into the bloodstream from the mouth tissue – meaning it's more sublingual compared to oral digestion.

Available at both Haverhill and Lowell locations, Mr. Moxey’s Mints are microdosed edibles that help energize, relax, sleep, or find better balance throughout the day.

Beverages

Often known as liquid edibles, canna drinks, or a type of mocktail, cannabis beverages are an ideal way to casually consume with the added benefit of precise dosing. Cannabis-infused drinks are a great way to control the amount of cannabis you want to consume while allowing you to be creative with your drink concoctions. Add CBD or THC drinks to juices, sports drinks, and teas, or even use it as a replacement for alcoholic beverages.

WYNK’s cannabis-infused seltzers come in a 1:1 ratio, making them the ideal alternative to any cocktail or alcoholic beverage. Whether you’re in a more social setting or looking to cool off with a refreshing drink, enjoy the microdosed sips of WYNK’s delicious flavors!

What Do Edibles Contain?

All cannabis edibles must be made with food-grade ingredients safe for human consumption. To infuse cannabis extraction into a food or beverage product, there are a few different options for the form of infusion, such as MCT oil, canna-butter, infused olive oil or cooking oils, and cannabis tinctures.

The additional ingredients and additions to each edible may vary, however, there are a few cannabinoids that you’ll most commonly find in most THC or CBD edible products.

THC (Tetrahydrocannabinol)

The most well-known cannabinoid today, THC is directly responsible for the psychoactive high effect felt from cannabis.

CBD (Cannabidiol)

As a non-psychoactive cannabinoid, CBD has become widely popular on our Massachusetts dispensary shelves due to its numerous wellness benefits. CBD interacts with our endocannabinoid system, providing relief to pain, anxiety, and even anti-inflammatory properties in our bodies.

CBN (Cannabinol)

CBN is a cannabinoid present in most cannabis cultivars, commonly found in cannabis edibles formulated for sleep or deep relaxation. That’s because its effects give a milder, sedative effect compared to other cannabinoids.

1:1 Ratio

A 1:1 dosage of cannabis often refers to an equal ratio between the two most well-known cannabinoids, CBD and THC. This is often considered to be a microdose, gaining the therapeutic benefits of both cannabinoids without any largely altering or psychoactive effects. This makes the 1:1 ratio of cannabis edibles ideal for people looking for a little more support in their day, without the high associations or quantity of THC in cannabis.

Tips for Dosage & Consumption of Edibles

One of the main differences between consuming edibles and smoking flower is the way it’s absorbed and broken down into our bodies. While cannabis flower is inhaled through the lungs and into the bloodstream, edibles are orally consumed, chewed, and swallowed before making its way through the digestive system. It’s like eating regular food, after all! Additionally, lozenges and sublingual cannabis products, such as infused mints or tinctures, enter the bloodstream by getting absorbed through the blood vessels under the tongue and cheeks.

Because of the different ways edibles are digested in our body, they also influence the duration and onset of effects. The effects of edibles can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours to kick in, depending on the dosage, your body’s metabolism, and how much food you consumed before the edible.

  • The best tip for consuming edibles is simple: start slow and low. Begin with a small dose of cannabis (anywhere from 0.5mg - 1.5mg) and wait until you’ve felt any effects before assessing and deciding to consume more.
  • This is especially important for new cannabis users or those trying a new edible product or cannabinoid.
